Who Needs ECMO

 Following complex Cardiac Surgery

“It was clear after a long complex procedure the patient could not be weaned off bypass. The patient was placed on VA ECMO and after some days on the Cardiac ICU the patient came off VA ECMO. They are now home”

Following Myocardial Infarction

“The patient had developed severe cardiac failure following a myocardial infarction. We needed to get them to the National Heart Failure Centre at the Jubilee in Glasgow. VA ECMO allowed us to stabilise the patient and transfer them safely”

Following Severe Drug Overdose

“They had taken an impulsive overdose of BP tablets. Despite all standard care their continued to deteriorate. They were placed on VA ECMO and did very well.”

Following Massive Pulmonary Embolus (PE)

“The patient was transferred from a DGH with a massive PE. Rescue therapies including Radiology and Surgery were considered. They continued to deteriorate after transfer and without ECMO would have certainly died. Placing the patient on VA ECMO allowed the intervention to be delivered. They have now made a full recovery and are out hill walking again.. Remarkable!”

Following either in hospital or out of hospital Cardiac Arrest

The patient was pre-alerted so the ECMO team were in ED ready when the patient arrived in the Resus room. We managed to get the patient on ECMO within 10 minutes.”
